Abuja, Nigeria – April, 2026.

Plateau State has emerged as the top-performing state in urban sanitation delivery under the SURWASH Programme, reinforcing its position as a national leader in environmental management and service delivery.
According to the latest programme scorecard presented during the 2026 Implementation Support Mission, Plateau State recorded an urban sanitation score of 63%, the highest among participating states. The state outperformed Ekiti (59%), Gombe (45%), Kaduna (43%), Delta (36%), Katsina (27%), and Imo (20%), reflecting a stronger and more coordinated approach to sanitation systems in urban areas.

The state’s performance is further supported by its results under Disbursement Linked Indicator (DLI) 5.1, where Plateau state achieved a score of 52, earning a “moderate” rating. While this classification indicates scope for further improvement, it confirms that the state has successfully met key programme benchmarks and is delivering verifiable outcomes in sanitation services.
Ongoing interventions in the provision of safe and accessible toilet facilities across schools and primary healthcare centres have significantly strengthened sanitation service delivery in Plateau State. By ensuring that functional toilets are available alongside reliable water supply, Plateau Environmental Protection and Sanitation Agency – PEPSA is enabling the practical adoption of hygiene behaviours, particularly among children and within communities. These efforts, complemented by drainage clearance, waste evacuation, and environmental enforcement, have improved overall service functionality and contributed to the state’s strong performance. More importantly, they align directly with the programme’s results-based framework, where funding is tied to measurable improvements in access to, and use of, sanitation services.

The 2026 Implementation Support Mission of SURWASH focused on accelerating results across participating states, strengthening accountability, and ensuring that investments translate into real improvements in water, sanitation, and hygiene services. Plateau state’s performance highlights the effectiveness of sustained institutional coordination and practical service delivery in achieving these goals.

Speaking on the results, stakeholders noted that Plateau’s leadership position demonstrates what is possible when systems are aligned with clear targets, accountability mechanisms, and consistent implementation.
As the programme moves into its next phase, Plateau state is well-positioned to build on this momentum, with a clear pathway toward achieving high-performance status in future assessments.
