Jos South Council Moves to Strengthen Community Security, Demands Arrest of Attackers

The Chairman of Jos South Local Government Area, Hon. Silas Patrick Dung, has called on security agencies to intensify efforts toward arresting and prosecuting perpetrators of violent attacks rather than merely repelling them during incidents.

He said bringing offenders to justice would help reduce the recurring cases of violence in Plateau communities and also restore public confidence in security institutions.

The chairman made the remarks during the distribution of 40 motorcycles to both conventional and community-based security operatives to improve patrol and rapid response across rural and semi-urban areas of Jos South.

According to him, the motorcycles were provided to address mobility challenges caused by difficult terrains and limited manpower. He cautioned beneficiaries against using the motorcycles for personal or commercial purposes, insisting they must remain dedicated to security operations.

Dung also commended the collaboration between the Plateau State Government and local government councils, appreciating Governor Caleb Mutfwang for giving council chairmen the operational freedom to carry out their responsibilities effectively.

He praised the contributions of security agencies, vigilante groups, traditional institutions, and other stakeholders toward sustaining peace in the area, stressing that safeguarding lives and property is a collective responsibility.

While acknowledging the constitutional right of citizens to defend themselves, the chairman warned against the unlawful possession or use of prohibited firearms by civilians.

Several dignitaries who delivered goodwill messages at the event described the intervention as timely and impactful for improving security in Jos South. Among them were the member representing Jos South in the Plateau State House of Assembly, Hon. Isaac Dalyop Gyang; the representative of the Sector 6 Commander, Major M. Gudu, who also serves as Area Commander of Bukuru; and the Gwom Rwey Vwang, who spoke on behalf of the Da Gwom Rwey Jos South.

In further efforts to boost security infrastructure, the council officially handed over a newly completed police post at Ladura Du to the Nigeria Police Force.

Hon. Silas Dung further disclosed that plans are underway for the establishment of two additional police divisions within Jos South to enhance security coverage across the local government area.

Also speaking at the event, the Plateau State Commissioner of Police, represented by DCP Lawal Abdulhamid, commended the council chairman for supporting security operations and emphasized that maintaining security requires collective participation from both government and citizens.

He further urged the local government chairman to continue strengthening support for vigilante and neighborhood security structures.
