The Plateau Cultural Carnival 2024 lit up the heart of Jos, Plateau State, on December 30 and 31, with the theme “Celebrating Unity in Diversity.” This two-day spectacle was more than just a festival—it was a vibrant showcase of Plateau’s rich cultural heritage and a testament to the state’s unwavering commitment to peace and unity.
The carnival kicked off with an electrifying procession on December 30. Decked in dazzling traditional attires, participants paraded from the State Secretariat Junction to Crest Hotel Gardens. The streets came alive with pulsating beats, colorful costumes, and infectious energy. At the gardens, attendees were treated to cultural performances, dance dramas, and a delectable array of local cuisine, offering a sensory journey into Plateau’s traditions.

December 31 marked the grand finale, a night of celebration and recognition. Awards were presented to individuals and organizations for their exceptional contributions to arts, culture, and tourism. Honorees included:
• Lifetime Achievement Award: Da Senator Jonah David Jang
• Arts and Culture Award: Filmmaker Dimbo Atiya
• Cultural Icon Award: Dantala Jatau
• Tourism Development Award: Godwin Nenpan Goyang
• Recognition Award: Princess Nwakego Ibrahim-Pam
Others recognized were Kenneth Gyang, PRTV, Plateau Express Service, and Integrated Dairies Ltd.

Debrah Jalmat, the visionary founder and convener of the carnival, hailed the event as a transformative celebration. “The Plateau Cultural Carnival is more than an event; it is a movement. It unites communities, showcases our unmatched cultural heritage, and drives economic growth through cultural tourism. By immersing in these vibrant parades and performances, we not only preserve our roots but also project our identity to the world,” she stated.

Jalmat also unveiled the theme for the 2025 edition, “Discover Plateau: Cultural Adventure,” scheduled for December 20-21, 2025. She extended an invitation to all to explore the state’s untapped cultural and tourism treasures.
Representing former Governor Jonah Jang, Senator Simon Mwadkwon lauded the carnival for bridging Plateau’s diverse ethnic groups. “Culture is the essence of who we are—our food, language, and way of life. Events like this preserve our roots, promote unity, and inspire younger generations to cherish their heritage,” he remarked.

Telzing Piya Nden, Director of Arts and Culture at the Plateau Ministry of Tourism, highlighted the carnival’s role in fostering peace and tourism. She praised the government’s support and urged private stakeholders to join hands in elevating the state’s tourism sector.
Special appearances by actor Kalu Ikeagwu, Ummi Baba-Ahmed, Tony Goodman, and Prince Daniel Aboki added star power to the festivities. The Carnival King and Queen, Lonny John and Queen Pyenmwa, brought glamour and elegance to the event, further enhancing its charm.
The Plateau Cultural Carnival 2024 proved to be a resounding success. It not only celebrated Plateau State’s cultural wealth but also reaffirmed its status as the “Home of Peace and Tourism.” By uniting communities through culture, the carnival underscored the power of heritage in shaping a brighter, more harmonious future.
