The Director General of the Plateau State Environmental Protection and Sanitation Agency (PEPSA), in collaboration with the School of Politics, Policy and Governance (SPPG) Waste Management and Recycling Capstone Group, has launched the Green School Waste Framework in Jos as part of activities marking World Environment Day 2026.
The Green School Waste Framework is an innovative environmental sustainability programme designed to improve waste management, recycling practices, environmental education, and climate awareness in secondary schools across Plateau State. The initiative was implemented in partnership with the Plateau State Ministry of Education and aims to equip young people with practical knowledge and skills for environmental stewardship.
The project was developed by students of the School of Politics, Policy and Governance (SPPG), Abuja, as part of their Waste Management and Recycling Capstone Project. The initiative seeks to address growing environmental challenges associated with poor waste disposal practices while promoting sustainable environmental behaviours among students and communities.

Speaking during the launch ceremony in Jos, the Director General of PEPSA commended the SPPG Capstone Group for developing a practical and sustainable solution to one of the most pressing environmental challenges facing communities today.
According to the PEPSA Director General, the Green School Waste Framework demonstrates how strategic partnerships between government institutions and academic organisations can drive environmental sustainability, climate action, and community development.
The framework introduces several practical environmental interventions, including:
1. Formation of School Eco-Clubs.
2. Introduction of Colour-Coded Waste Sorting Systems.
3. Recycling Education and Awareness Programmes.
4. Composting and Organic Waste Management Practices.
5. Community Environmental Advocacy Campaigns.
6. Student-Led Climate Action Initiatives.
A major highlight of the World Environment Day 2026 celebration was the Inter-School Eco Debate Competition, which brought together students from Government Secondary School Lamingo, Government Secondary School Hyei Rayfield, Government Secondary School Gwom, Government Secondary School Tudun Wada, and Government Secondary School Kyan Rikkos.
The debate competition provided students with a platform to discuss sustainable waste management, climate responsibility, environmental protection, recycling, and practical solutions to environmental challenges. The programme also encouraged critical thinking, leadership development, and environmental citizenship among participating students.
The Green School Waste Framework aligns with the World Environment Day 2026 theme, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future,” by promoting nature-based solutions such as recycling, composting, environmental education, and community participation as effective tools for climate action and environmental sustainability.
The initiative highlights the importance of raising environmentally conscious young leaders who understand the role of proper waste management, environmental protection, and climate resilience in securing a safer and healthier future.
PEPSA reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening environmental sanitation, waste management systems, environmental education, climate awareness, and community-driven sustainability programmes across Plateau State.
The Agency also called on residents to support environmental protection efforts through proper waste disposal, recycling, tree planting, clean community practices, and active participation in sanitation activities.
Through initiatives such as the Green School Waste Framework, PEPSA continues to promote sustainable waste management, environmental responsibility, climate action, and community engagement while advancing the vision of a cleaner, healthier, and more environmentally sustainable Plateau State.
